How-to: Bronzing powder

A bronzer is a must in your makeup bag. The fresh look on your face, like you have spent the day in the sun is not hard to accomplish with a good bronzer.

Choosing the right tone for your skin

A good bronzer can make your skin glow as much a day in the sun. But choosing the wrong colour can make your skin look grey and even a bit dirty. It is essential to find a colour that suits your skin tone. If you choose a colour that is too dark for your skin, especially if you have fair skin, it can make your skin look bland and dull, instead of giving you the sun kissed glow you want.

A golden skin tone will get a good glow with warm terracotta colours. But if you use this on pinkish fair skin the result can become orange and dull looking. More honey, caramel tones are more suitable for fair, pinkish skin. The Terracotta bronzers from Guerlain have a big range of tones and finishes to choose from.

The sun-kissed glow

It can be tempting to use the bronzer all over your face to make your whole face look more tanned… but this can make your face look dull and flat. A bronzer does not even out your skin tone like a mineral foundation or a powder. You get the best results if you use it on the outer parts of your face like a light contouring. The finishing of the bronzer is also something you need choose. Bronzers come in a matt- finish or shimmer, the shimmer version is easier to use.

To get the best result, use a foundation or a light powder before you apply the bronzer. This will make your skin tone more even and make a good base for the bronzer. The bronzers easily stick to more oily parts of your skin and the result will not be as good.

Always use a medium size makeup brush when applying bronzer. This gives you better control and it is easier to get a good result. Apply with light circular motion and make sure you fade and blend the edges well. Start on along the hairline on the forehead and work downwards in a number 3 motion, forehead, cheekbone and ending on your jawline. Use a minimum amount of the bronzer to start with. It is easier to apply more than to remove and have to start over….

Remember to be aware of lighting and the room you are in when you are applying your makeup. The more natural lighting the better the result. The lights in a bathroom can be quite deceiving and you might be using too much. If you by mistake apply to much you can try to cover up with a little bit of transparent powder. Finish your look with a light pinkish rouge to give your face just a little bit more natural glow.
